Surfing Waves

Hi All,

I'm looking into getting a longboard to complement my FireWire ADDVance. Mostly planning on using it in summer waves when the ADDVance can't catch anklebiters as well and potentially learning to cross step / noseride. Also figure it'd be good for practicing fundamentals if I feel like progress is stalling on my ADDVance. I'm 5'10", 165-170 lbs (75-77 kg), and have been surfing 1.5 years.

Is 9' the right size?

I found this board on CL for a good deal, which I am interested in picking up. Seems to have good thickness, but more on the performance side of things. In terms of damage, the owner said the finbox has been blown out and repaired and then just a few dings on the nose from hitting things. Would it work for what I want?

Also, what is the general wave size a noserider board is suited to handle?

3 1/2" thick is a lot of meat. But if you want to catch ripples, than that's good.

My other concern is if the side boxes are O'fish'l brand. Not clear from the photo if it's O'fish'l or Futures fins. But if it's O'fish'l, you'll have a harder time finding side fins.

What ever YOU the rider can handle. Before there was "shortboards", surfers used logs at Pipeline. ( and still do )

Please try not to focus on one size/dimension or volume calculators and such. Consider the whole package. If you're not doing longboard competitions, you can find a thick wide 8'6" like a Hobie Peter Pan Slug that can out float some 9 footer.

Those Arrow boards are supposed to be good....I would get it. That is the shaper that Jay Moriarty rode in real life.....he also made all the boards for the movie Chasing Mavericks. As long as it is watertight, not waterlogged or other catastrophic damages (creased, snapped) it will forever be the Indian and not the "arrow" with that board....

That photo is insane! I've never seen a nose ride on a heavy deep barrel!

Love that photo too. The wave, its color, the light coming through it, and then the skill of the surfer combine for the perfect photo

Yeah, I asked the owner and he said it was 3 1/8", but like you said I'm using this board mainly in the summer. I'll verify what the side boxes are, but I had been planning on using it as a single fin.

Do you think that even though it is more performance oriented, with its thickness it would not be too difficult a platform to begin learning noseriding?

I Do Not think that "Glider" is a Performance oriented longboard. It as it's name implies, a board that glides well, not rips apart waves. True it has more harder edged rails than a classic 50/50 soft rail noserider, but the nose width and thickness is more for cruise and glide.


both this guys are riding single fins.

I don't think I have ever seen that backwards paddle takeoff, that was cool.

I'm in the simiilar situation as OP - need a log / nose rider for competitions at local mal riding club. Waves are mostly small at my place. My weight is about 230lb.

So I found this Bennett log 9'6 x 23 x 2 13/16, nose 17 1/2, tail 16 5/16, rolled bottom to subtle nose concave, 50/50 rails, centred wide point, seems like it has everything you need in a nose rider, except nose could be wider (18+).

Question is - would this board be enough for my weight to nose ride?

Actually I was hoping I'll be ok since you posted before that you are a big boy @230lb, happy with your 9 footer and even able to nose ride occasionally!

So I was like ok I should be able to nose ride this board eventually. But look what I've got from the seller:

So now I'm not sure, I'd have to drop like 10kg of my weight or wait for a board a bit thicker 3+ to show up for sale.

Or I could just get this board (it is damn good!) and let it be my all rounder, cos frankly I'm not sure if/when I'd be able to nose ride something which is not an aircraft carrier size.

The seller's post says it all. He thinks the board will teach him how to one ride.
A simple equation if you can knee paddle it , it should be nose rideable , if you can nose ride!

Surfers who can't do stuff mostly blame the board........ Search endlessly for the board that can do it all:

I used to have a three stringer 9ft3 bennett , weighed a ton and turned like an over weight cow ,,, tried a 9-6 and 10 ft lighter boards which were great, and much better and versatile, best way to find out yoba is to pick a decent size wave , stay in the green and get ya toes on the nose m8 … go for 5 at first then move up the other foot while feeling how the board reacts to your weight shirt , it will depend on wave form as well, trim and speed too, feel your board as it moves on the wave when you are wanting to step up to the nose. but you got to try, to find out ..

Ok Ovion, since it sound like you are an absolute beginner, welcome to something you will,find amazing.
A couple of things that will help, where are you going to surf, how old are you, how tall and what do you weigh?
