Did I Have priority?

Whats up Guys!

So earlier today I was having one them really great sessions.
Just feel that needed to be included

So the story-
A guy on the outside of me, but slightly further out in the lineup went for a wave.
I could tell he was going to catch it but not until he got to about where i was, behind him.

Since i was on the inside and it was an epic wave  , I went for it. But he had already popped up before I did.
I didn't think much of it and just kicked out and let him have it.

When he came back out into the line up, he had a rant to his friend about how kids (Me) need to learn etiquette.
I almost said something because i was sure he was the one in the wrong. But then I thought about it and maybe he did have priority because he was the first one up. I'd never heard of it before but just food for thought.

Who do you think was in the wrong guys?

Rules may vary by break but in general if someone else is riding a wave and you takeoff on the same wave blocking their ability to ride the wave you are in the wrong

I would say the one first standing has the wave.

Peaky technically you snaked him! Wrong thing to do!
He definitely had priority
Often a guy outside can make a line where a short board further inside can do just what you did!.
How would it have been if he had swung a big round house cutback?
Further outside can set a fade into the pit for a monster bottom turn.
The guy outside should not use paddling superiority to take more waves though. If he took more than his share, well hmmm!
A simple rule of thumb, if somebody is on a wave, leave it alone :!:

A fairness in priority can be closest to the peak, furthest outside, longest waiting, even consider I've had a couple you go this one!

Why didn't you split the wave and go Left ( if he was up going Right ) ?

Ahhhh, that changes the dynamics of your question ( of which you didn't divulge at first ). He was further up the point. You snaked him. Case closed.

You just learned to bottom turn a few weeks back. How is that you were "sure he was the one in the wrong". You "assumed" you had the priority. We all make mistakes and mis-judge things. But for you to ( almost ) talk back to a local that probably ( I am assuming ) has been surfing at the point break longer than you've been alive, is worse than kooking out. Learn the rules of the break, make friends not enemies. Respect is earned, not given. One thing that goes a long way is "Give a wave, Get a wave". Tell that guy, "hey, that was a nice wave you had". Maybe one day he'll remember you and tell you "hey, you go".
