Surfing Waves

Pretty new to riding shortboard and wondering if investing in a used 6' catch surf odysea skipper would be worth it or not? I'm 6'1 and 175 pounds. Let me know if anyone has one and what you think. Thanks!

I took a look at that board. It looks like it is designed for small waves, small fast waves but might do well in small mushy waves too. Doesn't look like a beginers board. What are you currently surfing?

Started on a 9' long board, then a 7'2 fun board, now a 6'3x19.5x2.5 shortboard and just having trouble transitioning(not so much catching waves, but popping up and keeping speed). I mostly surf small mushy east coast waves on bad days and about chest to head high on really good days so I'm looking for something with enough volume, just not sure if it'd make it any easier since it was foam and I a little wider and thicker? Thanks dude!

Yeah if you are having trouble on a 6'3" it might be more difficult on a shorter board but the 6 foot version of the catch surf odysea skipper is a little wider so it might be about the same. I think a new board won't make it any easier unless you go longer wider thicker. If you might just stick with it till you get the paddling and lining up for short board fixed then see if you need a new board. Or go back to a longer board. I think if you got a 6'3" by 20" by 2.5" it might be a little better but the shorter board isn't likely going to help you catch waves

I own 5 foam/sponge boards ( 4', 5', 5'10", 6'6" and 2 longboards ). They're fun to own but I wouldn't use them as a "Daily Driver". Think of them as more of a pipe buggy. Sponge boards more for fooling around in beach break or for running tourist over. If you have a problem on a fiberglass 6'3", a sponge will be harder. They don't have much drive, due in part to the usual rubber bolt-thru the deck fins.

Do you stand up surf the 4ft?

Yes, I stand up on the 4'0". I got the 4 footer to ride during "blackball" here in Japan, when they close the beach to hardboards. But now they made a 47 inch rule. I guess a lot of guys were tearing it up on Beater boards. My board has FCS compatible plugs but you gotta be finless for "blackball". But at other regular beaches I run fins.

Impressive. I think I'm way too fat to even contemplate that.
