Intermediate surfer shouldn't need to ask.....depends on everything....local conditions, ability, what you enjoy and aspire to do on the wave. What's wrong with what you are on now? What do you want to be able to do that you can't now?

I'm still experimenting, trying a lot of different boards in different conditions and starting to sort out what I like. I buy cheap used boards and resell them for about what I paid....doing this has clarified things for me and answered via first hand experience many of the questions about board choice people have here. Building a quiver of boards is highly personal.....if you don't want to buy cheap then rent and go find out what you think you might be missing.

You really only need one board to surf. You can't surf two at the same time so you need to find excuses for more boards. If your current board is difficult to ride in bigger surf then a different board is needed. How many excuses do you have for needing another board?

Dude, You totally got to get these.
1) Longboard ( 9'0" to 9'6" ) for when the waves are small and you want to cruise
2) Shortboard ( 6'2" +/- ) for when the waves are good
3) Funboard ( 7'2" to 7"10" ) for when it's too big to longboard and it's too small to shortboard
4) Fish board ( 5'8" to 5'11" ) for when you want to shortboard but it's to mushy and choppy
5) Step-Up board ( 6'6" to 7'2" ) for when it's too big for your normal shortboard
6) Gun / Rhino chaser ( 8'6" to 10' ) for when the civil defense siren blows
7) Body board and fins ( 43" +/- ) for when you want to charge beach break closeouts
8) Fins and a handplane for when hard boards aren't allowed or you got to ride the bus to the beach

*** NOTE *** all above surfboards need to be multiplied by 2-3 depending on if you want single fin, twin fin, thruster fin and/or Quad. If you get a 5er fin set up, then all you need is to get a extra single fin in that size category.

Did I miss anything ?

No matter what 123 thinks he is not an intermediate surfer, at 180 he needs a longer board for his height and weight, I'm thinking 9ft but this advice was also given in April . An now a quiver , just get a board that works 123 delusions lead to frustration and cost you money.
Move down when you get the skills.

Of all things you missed specialised nose rider!

Hybrid, nugget and channel board as well. And a parallel profile. Maybe a zot.

And a blue one.

Don't forget epoxy, xf, PU,hydroflex and carbon fibre rails

I almost bought the bright yellow one uncle J!

Actually in surfer123's earlier post he mentioned the two boards suggested by magic seaweed for a beginner looking for a second board so he's doing his homework.

At least you're not rushing out and buying a CI 6' nothing!! From just taking a look at the two of them briefly, the 7's cog and the fourth chilli bean. They both seem like great boards with extra volume to get you going, the problem is that they're quite short and probably for someone who can already surf pretty well. I think I read that the fourth (which I like) the biggest comes in a 6'9! You're 6'2 same as me! And all you've been riding is a foam beginners board. It says in the jargon that it rides 8" shorter but that's only for guys who can already rip..not us kooks!

I'd love a go on a fourth chilli bean when I get a bit better, right now I've just bought a torq mod fun 7'2 (as if you hadn't heard :D ) so am going to post my findings up to give you an indication of what to expect. I've been surfing on and off on very crappy waves for the past year and a bit with almost once a week regularity these last 6 months. I go out back, catch green waves, can trim across the face and do some turns and funny looking comebacks at times. That's my level. What level are you at? It'll help the rest respond more helpfully :)

Also don't use caps for everything, it's known as shouting but all it really shouts around here is KOOK!
