Please help me find the right board dimensions.
So I grew up body boarding...haha I know speed bump, pecker dragger I've heard em all! I feel it important to share since I know the waves and feel very comfortable in the surf, I like dropping in on close out barrels get shacked and not worry about breaking my board.
I am 35 year old guy in good shape 5'6 and 150lbs. I Learned to surf on a 7'9" fun shape. I can surf on that but when I switched to a short board (6'0)I tried and tried got so frustrated that I gave up years ago.
I want to try again will be surfing mostly in Huntington and Newport. I want a board that will be easier to get into waves. I'm guessing 6'+ but thicker and wider?? What about other shapes? I prefer to not get a long board.
Any advice is much appreciated.

Why not go back to a 7' 9" fun shape again. I surf an 8 foot fun gun and it's really a lot of fun.

I body boarded for 15 years before I switched to surfing. ( Darn, I wasted 15 years that I could've been surfing ). But actually bodyboarding helped me learn about the waves and the motion of the ocean. My recommendation is for you to try a Soft Board for Black Ball. They're not toys or sporting goods wanna-be surfboards. They are made for surfers to surf during Black Ball that restrict hard boards ( and sometimes fins/skegs like here in Japan ).

Look into INT soft board ( mad scientist water machines too ), Beater by Catch Surf, Water Rampage by Amp surf stick. I had a INT 5'10" fish that has really good float and could use Futures fins. All those boards you can charge closeouts and come up smiling.

Another cheaper choice would be the 5'8" Sushi at Costco. It's less than $70. The fins don't work that good, but who cares. You're just dropping in, grabbing rail and pulling in until you get drilled.

I searched some more and found a 7'0" soft deck/ hard bottom Futures fins quad by Maunalua Surfboards ( look under Beach Boy not No wax ).

I was 31 when I first picked up surfing. Was so lazy before in an office job 9-5. Didn't do any exercise since I finished school. Initially started on a longboard, envy the guys in shortboard so I bought one. Struggled so hard so I went to a 7"6 funboard. These days I only surf long or funboard if the waves gets too big to paddle out.
