I'm a beginner in the south coast, UK, the waves are small. I plan to surf often and am looking for a board I can stick with for a while.

That size and shape will be a pretty good starter board if it is around 20" wide or a little wide better still and above 2"3/4 inches thick would be perfect. It will be a little less stable than a larger board but you will adapt quickly enough.
Now follows all the questions about pop up paddling duck diving etc. have agood read of this entire site, plenty of good answers for you . Get in and surf as often as possible, there the real answers lie
:D

Go and see Sean at Sorted in Boscombe or another local shop and try some boards. It's the only way you will find out what suits you. I surf Bouremouth and surrounding areas and my top tip would be not to get down heartened by the lack of surf at Bournemouth. Get down to Kernow and check out spots down there too.
