L.A. Board Advice

So I learned to surf on the gulf coast of Texas (surprisingly not impossible
) but have been away from the coast for four or so years. I surf when I visit home, but it's not too often. When I do decide to head to the beach, I alternate between my 7'2" funboard and my 6'2" fish, depending on what kind of a day it is. I'd consider myself on the lower end of intermediate as I've spent several years surfing, but I am obviously out of practice and about to move out to L.A. which is a noticeably different animal.
I'm wanting to invest in a new shortboard, and I'm thinking about buying something around 6'5"-6'6" x 19 1/2" x 2 1/2" (I'm 5'10", 150 lbs). Does that sound right? I really don't know what length and shape is appropriate for the faster waves I'll be experiencing on the west coast. Furthermore, what brands would you all recommend? I've seen so many unfamiliar manufacturers out of CA that I've become a tad lost. I plan to definitely talk to a local surf shop/shaper once I get to L.A. but I was hoping to get some preliminary advice before I go in talking cluelessly!
Thanks in advance for the advice!
