Postby ericzen » Tue Sep 25, 2012 2:07 am

Hi, I am looking to purchase a shortboard but not sure about the proper size. one in particular i am looking to buy is; 5' 11" x 18 1/4 x 2 1/4. I am 5'10" 175 lbs. would this be a good board or should i go for something a little bigger?

Can I ask what size you are surfing now? If you already have a small board then you are already used to it then yeah go for it.

I'm 200lbs and have ridden my bud's shortboards that size, but I had a heck of a time catching waves. However, you have 25lbs on me and I'm old LOL.

You should know based on your current board, Going from a 6'0 to a 5'11 no biggie, going from a 6'5 to a 5'11 is

HI ericzen, welcome to Surfing Waves!

You'll notice the difference when paddling the shortboard, but if you are surfing to a resonable standard then the change should not cause a significant problem for you.
Make sure you post it up for us to see once you've made your buy.

My personal view is that may be too large a drop in size. A 7' funboard is quite a big board and a 5'11x18.25x2.25 is a very small board, especially for someone of your weight. What are the full dimensions of the funboard?

I don't think you read my post correctly, I would not go from a 7ft funboard to a 5'11 potato chip.

You are going from a thick wide board to a really thin narrow board. I would pick something in between for transition, like a 6'3 x 19 1/4 x 2 3/8, ride that for a while, then go down if you think you are ready then.

If still not sure, go borrow or rent one, you'll see the difference, bit step...

Agreed. The difference between the funboard and the small board will be huge, particularly when it comes to paddling (ie. you might not be able to catch any waves on it).

yeah, i see what you are saying and i am aware of the differences. which is mainly why i want to progress to a shortboard anyway. i was just trying to find out if a board that size would perform properly for my weight. i understand a 6'4" would probably be ideal for me. but if i can use a 5'11" without any issues than i probably will buy it. And Thank you everyone for the info.
