could use some advice on a first time surfboard...

So I'm new to surfing and I'm moving from the midwest to south carolina tomorrow so I hae never surfed. What is a good board for me to start with? I'm 6' tall and right around 300 lbs. Ex football player... so obviously I would think a pretty big board. Any information or advice would be appreciated.

Start with a big longboard. 10' & at least 3" thick would be good.
Make sure you can swim well before you head into the water.

Morning jwalsh66, lots of information spend a little time cruising the longboard thread, as there is plenty of information + the surfboard advice forum too.
What's with ex footballers taking up surfing? We had a few pass through

If you are relatively new/unused to the ocean, I also suggest a few sessions body boarding to get used to the concept and feel of catching waves. Don't be fooled though; bodyboarding is infinitely easier than surfing

Don't let your size get you down if you have the money for a new board try the walden mega magic 9 footer. With the soft waves of our east coast it will flout you better and paddles easy but you'll pay about 950.00 or so. Great begenners board and a good board to hang on to for those low days of surf.

Start big and work smaller. I got my first board recently and when I was talking to the salesman he told me to start big and work your way down.

get a foamie about 9ft and get some lessons otherwise you will just not enjoy the experience
foamies are extremley bouyany and easy to correct mistakes on. any thing shorter for your first time surfing you will just nose dive and get wiped out.
after a couple of lessons on a foamie theres no reason why you you cant go on a minmal board (hard board)
