is a semi gun shape appropriate for beginner/intermidiate

Postby davebod » Sun Oct 09, 2011 11:12 pm

Hi I had a quick question , Iam looking to buy my first board and a friend of mine is selling a byrne 7'2 board that has a gun like nose but seems wide enough , is this a decent board to continue learning on due to the lack of a rounder nose like the fun boards i am used to, I am not sure what difference the nose of the board makes? P.s. he wants 150 , is this a good deal?
thanx so much guys

The easiest way for everyone to comment is to post a picture or at least the overall dimensions, why :?: because a semi gun is a mixture of profile, rail types, rocker and width, a lot more than a just a nose shape.
If it is a semi gun it will be pulled in and slightly narrower than a funboard shape, it will want to run and give more speed unless you are capable of pushing the speed out it will feel out of place in fairly ordinary surf, semi-guns are made for hunting in the increasing size and shape zone.
As for the difference the nose makes, a full nose in a longer board gives more buoyancy/ volume and forward stability for driving on the nose, it does however create more drag when dropping into wind coming up the face of a hollower wave, hence the narrowing of the nose for semi-gun, gun and performance short boards.
Another easy answer as it's between friends, try the board and see if it suits you If you like it $150 is fine if you feel it is fine.

this is the link to the board http://cnj.craigslist.org/spo/2597962953.html , i emailed the guy and he said its a 7'4 not a 7'2 , I can't really try it out because he's far away , my optimum board choice would be a 7'6 fun board I would like to know if this board would suit my needs as a begineer

That looks like a reasonable all rounder, if it has the volume /or you are not a large weight guy it could do the job. Hey at 150 it's cheaper than rentals or a new board and it will get you going down in length as you wish. It will feel skittish and jumpy compared to what you have been riding and the effort you have put into turns before will produce a mush bigger result.
No like, no problem, on sell, on Craigs list.
It will still be cheaper than renting and you'll know a little more about what you want. :D
