RNF or Funboard????..I'm STUCK!

Postby kevtav » Wed Aug 10, 2011 11:40 am

Hey guys,

I surfed YEARS ago, almost 18 years and haven't been out since.

Talked to some dudes about best board to get back into it with and it's either a Funboard or RNF (maybe a Lost)

I'm 5'8 -5'9 about 185 pounds. I was more of a body surfer boogie boarder back then but I have experience on boards.

I was thinking a Funboard around 6'8 -7'2 or a Round Nose Fish about 6'2 or around there. Am I good on this theory? If it's a Funboard, any suggestions of a brand?

Forget the fish - totally unsuitable for a beginner (and, yes, you are a beginner again..) ;)

At 185 pounds, you'll need something at least 7'2, so think big at this point. A well volumed funboard or a mini-mal would be best.

For now, you'd be better off getting a cheapish popout mini-mal around the 7'6 mark - BIC, NSP or similar. They're not sexy, but they're perfect for learning on.

I have an NSP fish 6'4 and I love it! It's way too much board for me (I'm only 120 lb. and 5'7), so it is a challenge to duckdive, but even I can manage it. It's really floaty, but catches waves so easily. They are also really durable. I love being able to paddle out with the longboarders and still catch waves abut as much. The board is a little hard to maneuver on the wave, but you can still make sharp bottom turns and carve the wave well. This may be a good board for you...

Hi kevtav, welcome to Surfing Waves!

I'd suggest you look at a 7'2 at the absolute minimum, the longer the better. It makes it far easier to improve as a beginner if you surf on a longer board.

After 15 years surfin I surf a 6'1 RNF at 200lbs, but there is no way I could have surfed it 14 years ago.

Of the two you mentioned a 7'2 minimall is what you need. However, if you want a sexier looking board go with a retro king fish. Their intended purpose is for big (250lb) dudes but they work wonders for begginers, something in the size of a 6'6 to 6'8, but make sure it's nice and thick and wide.

You aren't ready for a potato chip yet...
