In addition to what drowning had to say:
1) you need a 9 foot long board, and
2) you can also search many posts by me explaining how and why long board and not anything else (i.e., not fun board, not hybrid)

In closing, I hope you remain stoked
Billie

P.S. buy used board. I always have

As a total beginner, pleassssseee don't buy a board yet. First try some out and check out if you really like surfing or not. If so I would advice you to start with a Mini Malibu board

The Mini Malibu Surfboard is a great surfboard shape for beginners. Not only will the shape of the board help you paddle with ease, the rounded nose will create great stability when standing up for your first time. Mini Malibu surfboards are easy to carry and manage out in the water but with all the surfing ease of a longboard. The basic rule for buying a beginner’s surfboard board is; the longer the board the easier it is to ride. However, sometimes too big of a board can be hard to handle. That’s why the Mini Malibu Surfboard is a great balance of size. If you are between 100lbs and 200lbs Isle Surfboards has a mini Malibu surfboard that is right for you. Check out our Weight Chart to find your correct size Mini Malibu Surfboard. Isle Surfboards offers Mini Malibu Surfboards in both Fiberglass and Epoxy.

Come down to the Good People Surf camp in spain for a FUN summer of surf... to try some boards out and after a week we will guide you to buy your own board. http://www.goodpeoplesurf.com

Good luck

Firstly, if you are a complete beginner I would reccomend against buying a surfboard. Rent a few different ones to see what you like!

I would not go for a longboard though, anything too long becomes unweildy and hard to maneouver in the water (turning to paddle for a wave etc). For your size I would try something in the 7ft to 8ft range; they will (shape permitting) be just as easy to paddle as a longboard and will have the added benefit of being easier to handle both in and out of the water.

Try to go as wide as possible for your first board.

Personally I would go for an NSP as your first board. There is a lot of hate against them on these boards, but they are good boards for beginner to intermediate and will be really easy to resell. One of my favourite rides was the NSP 7'6" funboard, and that would probably be a good starting point. They do surf betty surfboards, if that is your thing, but I think they are just recoloured boards from the normal range. I have never ridden one, but you could get a bic instead. If you go for a bic, try and go for the epoxy layered bics, (the boards without a plastic cap on the end). They are lighter, and created in a MUCH better way.
