Surfing Waves

Ok so I learned how to ride on a longboard. I'm not very experienced yet but I kind of have the very basics down. I'm going to buy a board of my own and I found one that I really like but I have a few questions. I would like to go as short as I can because I live in a dormatory and space is VERY limited. I also drive a small car that I can't fit a longboard in (I don't have a roof rack). Now I know that longboards are much easier to catch waves on but I think I might have found something that will work. The board is a 6'1", 20 1/2 inches wide, and 3 inches thick. It has a squashed tail and the nose is very wide. I'm 5'11" and weigh about 178lbs. I was hoping that the extra thickness and width could make up for some of the length. The board is also epoxy which I like because I know I'd ding the xxxxx out of a fiberglass board taking it in and out of my car. Is this board at all a good choice for me or should I keep looking?

Those are interesting board dimensions. I'm guessing its not your normal surfboard type and as such may not be the way to go for you to progress your surfing style. I have to disagree with DBBB on the length though, due to its thickness i don't think its too short as it should catch waves easily as does my 5ft10 x 20.5 x 3 retro fish. I do however think that its probably not the right board for you just yet.

I am 6'3" and 190-200lbs and i started on a 6'6 x 19 and something x 2 3/8 and even that i would say was too short (ok maybe not short but not thick or wide enough for my slightly bigger ass) and took me longer than it needed to get going.

But seeing as you got the basics that length (around 6'6" - 7'0" with a bit of volume and width or you wont catch anything coming from a long board) would be good and you can fit that size in your car at least. Just remember when learning (i learnt the hard way and don't have enough money to buy a slightly larger board) but it is better to have a little more length with you board than not enough. By having a little bit extra, so i have been told; helps you draw out longer more "visually appealing" style/turns etc (as you have to do less to keep the boards speed etc because the shorter the board the more active you have to be) while learning instead of jerky and forcing your turns. Obviously theres a lot more to it but yea i dont know more than that

Alright thanks alot everyone. I was looking at a 7'6 before but wasn't sure if I could fit it. I think I'll just do that and figure something out for space. Looks like it'll be just me in the car cuz the board is gonna go from the trunk to the front seat on the passenger side.

I reckon he ties the passengers onto the roof and keeps the boards safe in the car !
