When Should I move from my lil foamie to the real thing?

Don't really have anyone else to ask so ...
Been surfing about 7 times now, Life changing I say.
I been renting a 8' foamie, I feel like I have progressed well. I can paddle onto practically any wave I want to make (they're small and seem easy to catch
) and getting up isn't something I have to think about anymore. The last time I went I was struggling to turn that foam creature, but I was able to go backside by grabbing the rail and just digging my heels in. It felt so good. For some reason turning on my frontside was hard for me on that, but it happened once or twice. Most waves that day turned to mush fast.
So given my time on the foam, I was going to rent a 8' fiber ( I think thats what theyre constructed of @ the rental place).
Is this appropriate? I just didnt want to spend the afternoon being discouraged if I really wasn't ready yet.
Better yet, anything special I should be ready for? Besides guarding my face when i fall?
