I’m 55y female. Had a total hip replacement two years ago. Surgeon reluctantly signed off on surfing one year post surgery. He definitely was not thrilled about my return to surfing. He insisted on mellow baby waves, waist to chest high max. His concern was what if my hip pops out in the water after being tossed around, how will I get back to shore? I waited 2 years post surgery before I paddled out. DH and I went down to Rincon PR last week and luckily found mellow waist high waves while we were there. I was definitely fearful the first few days. I did have to relearn popping up as I now have a hip that works, I was hit by a car crossing the street when I was 8. The impact was to my left hip, pushing my hip in and out of place. The socket grew over the femur at the hip junction clamping down prohibiting any kind of movement, it wasn’t a cartilage wear out situation. I literally had no mobility getting to my feet pre surgery.
I’m active and in very good shape but I still think about what I can or shouldn’t do post hip replacement.
Best of luck to all that decide to go forward with this surgery.
