I learned on a fun shape. I like them, I still like to ride them.
I was going to suggest that you take a drive up to Buffalo or some of the other breaks up on Lake Erie, but I looked at a map and wow, dude, you live in the middle of no where (as far as surf goes)
I had a little Kia Spectra and I could strap a 10' board to the top to problem, you just have to get a good rack for your car, surf boards ride on top of cars well.
What I do when I want to go on a surf trip and my funds are low, is throw a blanket and some pillows in my truck and put the seats down and sleep in the back of it.
The beaches on the ocean usually have fresh water showers, and if you surf near a pier there are usually bathrooms there. Although chicks might dig the trailer a little more.
If you can afford a trailer, buy one! or a small motor home, or something like that, even a pop up camper.
If you go to a break enough, you are bound to meet someone in the line up that will become a good friend and good friends always let you crash on thier couch.
