what kind of board is good for mushy waves?

Hey guys. My name is Matt and i live in Texas. I want to get a board but don't know what kind to get. The waves in Texas are small and mushy, except during hurricanes, then they get really good. What type of board is best for these crappy waves? I'd like to know about height, thickness, width, tail...just everything. I went longboarding when I lived in Calif. and im really not too interested in longboards. so maybe a hybrid? Even though i've been longboarding several times I wouldn't say i'm a good surfer, just decent maybe. oh, and im 6'1", 190 lbs, if that matters at all. thanks alot.

Damn it!

i am going to Texas, maybe to live there. I am from Brazil. That´s just bad news to me. I didn´t expect a gulf to have great waves, but it didn't have to be so bad.

I´l be going to Hondo, close to San Antonio.

Sorry i can't help with the board though, i dont realy know much about surf, just beginning. My guess would be a fish. Flat bottom and wide board.

I´ll just take the chance to ask something i wanted to ask for quite some time. How does an oversized fish perform?

you need a board bigger than you for sure; so if you are jus learning a very forgiving funshape board would do; do not get impresed by those good looking narrow shape boards..half the guys who have one can not cath the waves.
So..get a 8 footer fun shape that has 3 fins that can float you and it's easy to paddle, dont buy new..(not yet) trust me! not worth it!

good luck

I am going to texas and this is prety much my question too. Could i get a 7' "fish"? I think the swallow tail gives some drive at the expense of stability right? For small mushy waves stability is not much needed am i right?

What about wings? Is wing swallow good? am i getting too much ahead of myself with this?

I started learning on a 7'2", so i am sure a board a bit smaller will be ok now that i dont have much trouble standing up anymore.
