Hey man, I'm around the same age and weight and I notice a big difference if I drop below 40 liters.
Your 6'5 @ 38L hybrid sounds kinda narrow or thin to me. I have a couple boards around 6' @ 40L that have good maneuverability but still paddle well. Also looking for a hybrid with a more narrow tail would probably help with turning.

Also if you paddle into corners of the wave you would probably want a longer board, for more glide, but staying above 40L+.

1) Could you explain more of why the Hybrid stopped your progress ?

2) What do you like about the 7'0" Soft compared to the 6'5" Hybrid ?

3) After "years of mistakes", are you thinking you should go longer or shorter ?

Thanks Naeco78 for yours tips

waikikikichan :
1. I did not catch many waves with him
If I had not stood in the right position, it was difficult for me to maneuver with him
2. I catch a lot of waves with the soft
I have more confidence in high waves
3 I think with the length of 6 6.5 I get along , but I lack volume
I do not know whether to buy top soft - for the volume and confidence
or Fish / Hybrid with more volume

Your 7'0" soft board probably has more float ( and has thicker boxy rails ) than a 8'0" traditionally glassed board.

If you don't want to get a 8'0" mini-mal to learn the basics and how to move about the board, THEN I would recommend a 7'2"ish Big Fish.

I wouldn't go with a Fun board. I think something with wider outline and a wider tail will help you.

This 7'2" has more than 51 liters ( but I always says forget about volume/liters )

Of the 2, if I could only pick from those 2, I would go with the 7’2” Fish as it is 1 inch wider and 1/8 thicker. I would say those factors, including the outline, is more important than the 4 extra inches in length.

But if you’re not able to move your feet around and turn with your back foot over the fin(s), then any board won’t matter, if you want to carve.

I agree with waikikikichan, 7'2 looks like a better fit for you. I'm currently looking at that one myself, so if you pull the trigger I'd love to hear a ride report. I'm in a similar boat as you. Find with age and long stretches out of the water even pre-pandemic, the time spent on the 're-learning curve' going back to something between 6'8-6'10 just isn't worth it. Even one of my last 6'10 2+1 from Diverse Dave, while an excellent design, found I really struggled to get into your average 3' even with its 44L. Although as waikikikichan says I wouldn't get fixated on literage, I think you'll find the wider design, flexible fin setups, and 52L will get you in there and learning to turn with your back foot over the fins.

Let us know, I'll more than likely for the 7'2 Torq myself!
