Looking for advice as newbie

Postby danielwaddington » Thu Apr 22, 2021 9:59 am

Hey all.

I've done surfing a few times but due to where I live and financial restraints I've been unable to take up the sport. Now at least part of that has changed and I'm going to buy a board to learn on.

What is the best type of board to learn on?

What size board is best to learn on?
I'm 172cm and 72kgs.

Where is good place to get used surfboards and wetsuits (might go new on the wetsuit)?
Either online or shops in Cornwall, I'll be near lands end and Hayle.

How do I transport it?
I have a Thule roof rack, be aware it's at least a 2hr drive to the nearest beach (on the motorway) and I'll be going on 5 to 6hr trips to Cornwall from Yorkshire.

Any locations to learn near Yorkshire people recommend?

Any advice is welcome and thank you in advance.

Thanks for reposting Daniel, let‘s deal with the roof rack and board transport, no problems, a good tie down is the ratchet type flat strap and they hold well at motorway speeds, boards always increase fuel consumption but surf awaits!

If you are now free of financial restraints then hire a few softboard hours or hard board above the 8ft mark, to try before you buy.
The secondhand. range in Cornwall could be a good option, we suggest that you post pictures of boards you fancy and we can then tell if they are suitable. Wet suit buy new but try on of course! Buying in one shop may cut you a better deal so shop around!
You will also need a board ba or at least a board sock to protect your new board.
Good luck, post ya pics and. a pretty amazing time is about to enter your life...... on line advice too

Plenty of surf spots on the east coast. You don't need to drive all the way to Cornwall.

I'm going down to Cornwall for a running event and thought it's a good place for surfing
