Portugal relocation

Postby mussinata » Tue Aug 25, 2020 1:09 pm

Hi there, and thanks in advance for your advice;)
I just relocated in Porto, Portugal, and I eventually have almost daily conditions to surf.
When I lived in Italy I was forced to fly to Basque Country or Canary Islands to practice.
Actually is almost ten years I haven't been surfing.
I'm 42, 5'11'', 175lbs nice physical fit and I would define myself almost an intermediate surfer (or at least as such 10 years ago).
I'm about to buy a new board and I was considering something between 5'11 and 6'6 depending on the board, namely (beside local shapers nice opportunities) I shortlisted my choice to:
Firewire Evo Helium 5'11, Haydens Hypto Krypto 6'2, Takayama Scorpio 2 6'4, Pyzel Phanthom 6'2/Gremlin 6'0
Despite I should have nice consistent waves, I'm worried to have to few liters under my chest given the time I haven't been surfing.
Let my know your thoughts ;)
Ciao,
Paolo

I think you’ll have a very hard time with a shortboard. But it probably depends on how young you were when you achieved intermediate skills. I had intermediate surf skills and quit for 12 years. It was just like learning all over again to me. But I have heard that if you are very young when you learn then it’s like riding a bike The advantage you will have is knowing what to do
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

I've never surfed at Porto and whenever my surfer friends send me videos of their "good" surf. They don't look that great, I don't think it will work with a shortboard?

Try rent one. After 1.5 year of very little surf, my stamina and confidence is gone. I can't even surf two days in a row now.
