7'8 Surfboard Egg Beginner advice

Postby kookstyle321 » Thu Apr 25, 2019 5:44 am

Hi,

I am looking at this board:

https://mollusksurfshop.com/collections ... -hanel-egg

it is a gary Hanel 7'8 surfboard. I have been on a 8'0 wavestorm and have been doing pretty good on it, wanted to move up to the next board i will be spending a lot of time on. I do not want to go for a longboard and definitely not a shortboard so i am settling in between.

I borrowed my friends 7'6 no name surfboard and had such a hard time due to it being narrow and very little volume for its size which makes me kind of hesitant about the 7'8 board - BUT it is an egg style board. maybe that will make a big difference if anyone can give any insight on this.

Any tips / advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

It’s a nice looking board and a 7’8 egg is a reasonable choice. But do you know the dimensions? I suggest you probably want something about 22 inches wide and reasonably thick. An egg board can be much narrower and thinner than that; so merely being ‘an egg’ is no guarantee

You shouldn't be getting a rounded pin if you already don't have flow and rail control.
A sponge 8'0" is misleading in it's float, stability and flex that actually helps absorb wave imperfection and your bad technique, where as on a hard board it would throw you off.
I would recommend getting a 8'2" funboard or mini-mal with a squash tail.

Great advice.

I had a perfect balance of fun and challenge with the 8'0 length.
Any specific brands & models you can recommend me to check out?

I just got a Hanel egg, but won't be able to try it out until maybe in a couple of weeks.
