Flyer or M13?

Postby NarcolepticAxolotl » Thu Jun 28, 2018 1:28 am

I live near San Diego, California and am just above 5'10" and around 125 pounds. I've never surfed before, but I want to and I was wondering what board to get. I've done a little research and it sounds like a flyer or M13 are good boards. Which one is better for a beginner? Of course, if you think I've got it all wrong and neither is good for a beginner, then please say so.

Neither board is suitable for a raw beginner! Both are boards for well experienced surfers.
I would suggest sometime about 8ft/ 6 Inches with good paddling power and stability as you your muscle develop. Paddlestrength, beach reading wave knowledge and physical skill. Before you even consider boards like this.
I moved your post to surfboard advice, have a read through the various post see what the idea is.
You could try board rental and experience before you lay out cash!
Cheers and welcome to the journey

Those boards are technically "good" boards, or they WERE like 15 years ago. Could you point out the exact sources you got that information that they're good boards for beginners, because those boards are ancient ( and most definitely NOT for someone who's never surfed before ).

As jaffa said, neither are good. The flyer would be a really bad choice; a big M13 would be a bad choice (unless you are surfing head high walls a lot) (which you wont be)

If you are just starting out, honestly you can do a lot worse than getting a wavestorm for the first six months, until you can stand and control your board a bit, prevent yourself from hitting other people (and yourself) and have a better idea of the surf and how to handle it. If you want to buy a 'proper' hard board first up (which is fine as well, just a bit more expensive), then as Jaffa recommends.
