Here's something fairly long, large surface area, and high volume for its class. The Rusty Moby Fish, touted as "Fantastic for Beginners". Would this be appropriate for 1-3ft waves? It's available from 6' to 8'6".

It would depend on the kind of waves you were going to use it in and what you wanted to do in them.....I have a similar kind of board and I like it a lot. I also have longboards.....ride them differently and use for different conditions though sometimes I could use either depending on what I feel like. If you are looking at using in 1ft faced waves, I'd go with a longboard.....that fish as big as they come will still need some push before you get it to come alive.....better off with a bigger board if really small mushy waves that you want to cruise on are the conditions and goals.

Nothing stopping you from getting both.............just saying'....... :)

Just to follow up. Got a Walden Mega Magic in 8ft from local shop. Saw them online for as low as $869, plus shipping. Struck a deal for $825 and had them throw in a mid-range leash, T-shirt, and few bars of wax. I'm satisfied with that and look forward to paddling out first chance I get. Next step is a set of Posca paint pens and let my two artistic kids customize it. I want to personally thank everyone for taking the time to offer their input, advice and for sharing their wisdom. Indeed, I learned a great deal from you all, so I'll raise the glass here to you all. See you in the lineup. Cheers, Doc

Update for the buds who helped me make a choice. Loving the board! Interesting how even with the huge volume, it's not as easy to catch unbroken swells as it was with a narrower but longer (9'6") board I used many years back. I think the 8ft is perfect for what I wanted. Hard rails in the rear allow a good bottom turn. I only nose dived once. Now, gonna try walking to the front! :D Cheers!

If we had known you were a goofy footer ....

Sounds like you made a great choice. Whenever I see a walden board I almost think it's cheating, makes things look so easy
