Is this board and brand any good? Are pressure marks ok?

Postby jonyc » Tue May 30, 2017 1:08 pm

I'm stepping down from a 8'2" mini mal / Fun board and am looking at this 7'4" mini mal so I can get some maneuverability .
Little about me: I'm 5'9" 155lb/70kg and been surfing for a few years casually.

    My questions are as follows:
    1. Have you heard of a brand called "SEADEVIL"? Have you heard of it? Is it any good?
    2. There are some pressure more on the board. Is that ok?

Havent heard of the brand but there are 1000s, so that doesnt mean anything. You just need to look at the board - even the 'best' brand, badly treated, is a bad board

The dents look ok, just a bit of banging against a car or doorframe etc. Just need to check that they are dents without any breaks/cracks in the glassing

Bit hard to tell what the board is like without a full length shot, but to the extent I can see it looks fine for your purposes

I've not heard of this brand, often a board shaped by a local shaper can work great for local conditions.

When choosing a secondhand board my main concern is to look to see if it is water tight.

Pressure dings don't matter too much, although do look for cracks around these dings which potentially could lead to letting water in. Small cracks in the fibre glass can be duct taped, puttied or fixed proffesionally. Make sure the board is a dry as possible before any repairs.

Jonyc, questions for you.
1) Doesn't the 8'2" you've been using for years have pressures ?
2) Does your 8'2" happen to be a molded-epoxy board instead of the 7'4"s Poly/PU construction ?
3) How much did the 7'4" cost ?
4) What's a good screwdriver brand ? What's a bad screwdriver brand ?

Thank you everyone!

waikikikichan, My 8'2" was my first board and was epoxy / fiberglass combination so quite very durable and no dents, just scratches.
I sense some sarcasm here. Like a bad car brand would be a Japanese Infiniti and good would be Porsche, I believe brands matter. I'm just honestly trying to ask questions here because this is my second board purchase. Please don't troll.

Sea devil boards, diabolical brand. FYI even the "Brand name" boards can make bad boards, secondhand brand name means nothing!
If the name color or fashion item of your board is important then you have missed the point of surfing.
How you surf your wave :!:

Jonyc, I am honestly trying to help you. Not trolling at all. I'm trying to make you answer/think about your own question. It's really a hard for anyone to answer if that particular board is "good" or "bad". Are you talking about "Performance" or "Durability" or other variables ?
Coming from a Molded-Epoxy board, you won't be used to the pressures and spider-cracks that seem to occur daily. Pressures happen on the first day of a poly/PU.
You say brand matters. If you had a leaking faucet spraying all over the place and asked someone to hurry and pass you a screwdriver, would you refuse the first one and say "no not that one, only the Stanley branded one". Wouldn't the dollar store screwdriver do the job ? ( but maybe not for a lifetime, but for it's life ) Surfboards are tools or a paint brush, it how the person using it creates things. It's hard to answer what is a "good" or "bad" brand. Most of the materials fiberglass, resin, catalyst, foam blanks only come from a few sources. ( however a bad glass job could be heavier and weaker than a good glassing and sanding ).
You said Infiniti is a bad car and Porsche is a good car. But Infiniti ( Nissan) is one of the top car manufactuers ( I love the Skyline GTR ). Porsche of course is a expensive high end car maker. But is it good for shopping ? For hauling lumber ? For 15 year kids with a learners permit ? Maybe not. If i think of a bad car, i think of YUGO. they were so bad and that company is gone ( well at least in the US ). Now could a professional driver in a Infinti beat me in a Porsche ? Most likely. Can a Waikiki beach boy on a 8'0" sponge Costco Wavestorm out surf a beginner on a Kelly Slater's world champion ship board ? Is Firewire, Channel Islands, Lost brands better than BIc, NSP and Torq ? Probably you get a 99.99% consensus that they are. But to a beginner-newbie, Bic, NSP and Torq are more user friendly and durable ( which you already know ). Surfing is unique in that "Cost" does not equate to how the surfer will perform. ( experience and wave knowledge does )
But that might be comparing performance. But if you're talking about good and bad in terms of Quality / Durability, then the board your looking at seems to be fine. It WILL get more pressures and spiders cracks and ding more easily than your previous board. But should ride fine up to the input you put into it.

Questions are good. You'll never know unless you ask. The thing is for surfing, there's sooo many variables. ( and soo many different answers ) What's a good board for someone, might be a terrible board for someone else. A fun wave for one surfer, might be boring for another surfer.
Let us know how the board works out. It's great when people give us feed back after asking for advice.
