I just used polyester on epoxy by mistake:0...

Postby Surf22476 » Mon Feb 13, 2017 3:02 am

Hey Guys,

I thought my board was a polyester board and used polyester sun cure resin on it for a couple ding repairs that were small but deep enough to hit the Styrofoam. After applying it, I saw that the board had the "white net" that you use when doing a Epoxy repair.

1. Does the fact that there is the "cloth" under the resin make it a epoxy board?

2. If it is an Epoxy board, Is it a huge issue that I put polyester resin on it? Should I try to chip it out?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Did the styrofoam polystyrene foamdissolve? The white net may well be the fibreglass mat, epoxy is the resin that can go on polystyrene,
ordinary resin can go on PU foam as can epoxy resin.
But put standard resin on polystyrene the foam dissolves.
If you pu one resin on the other, they do not bond well, and the repair breaks down quickly.

Rules of thumb when you don't know ; post picture or details , find out best action , do next.

Post a picture of your board, if there is no foam dissolved .... all good!

The key word in your statement is "Styrofoam". If the core is made of Styrofoam or EPS ( expanded polystyrene ) polyester resign will melt it. You would know immediately, since it would start to disappear in front of your eyes.

The white net is probably fiberglass which is used to make both epoxy and polyester resin boards, The fact that it became more visible is a clue that you made a mistake because both resins tend to make the fiberglass invisible and probably a clue that the resin went beyond the fiberglass and dissolved the foam a photo would help us to figure it out more accurately
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.
