im surifng in sydney once a week. been on a long board for a while now and want a board change.

im 175cm 80kg
i can currently go down the line and trim thats about it..
i was thinking the 6"4 or 6"6
any advice people?

7ft to 7ft6 mini mal. Or a 6'10 hybrid. The other boards will probably result in you not catching waves for several months

Wait until you can do turns AND go back side before you move down to a short(er) board.

Being able to pull waves in a crowd is part of the skill set as well as a consideration for what kind of board....doesn't matter if you can turn and go backside if you can't paddle well enough to get waves in a crowd....bigger board you can catch outside the short boarders...if you aren't up to snuff in terms of being paddle fit, going toe to toe in a crowded Aussie break with other short boarders will be pretty frustrating, esp. if you blow the first couple of waves that you do manage to tuck into....

There are no 'beginner' beaches in Sydney, but there are beaches that are full of beginners, which makes it easier for you. Namely Manly and Bondi; although neither are particularly close to Nth Avalon. But if they are accessible, I would try one of them.

The other option (and, indeed, the option for any beach) is NOT to go to the peak where all the surfers are, but find another smaller/not as good peak somewhere else on the beach. I don't know Avalon so don't know if that is feasible, but usually there are 2-3 surfable peaks on most beaches - one will be good and the others may not be, but its better to catch a poor wave than to not catch a good wave.

If you have a car and spare time and want a weekend away, drive south of Sydney. Even Wollongong is a lot less crowded (Bulli, Corrimal etc beaches generally only have a handful of surfers unless conditions are really good, and Corrimal seems to have about 5 surfable peaks whenever I am down there), and once you get past Kiama there are beaches everywhere with hardly anyone on them.

North Avalon is high competitive zone, North AV rocks eat beginners. Little AV eats everybody at least once a session , with the remains of the Fiji cyclone swell , any part of the beach will eat you! Collaroy is generally considered a beginners beach as is kiddies corner at Palm Beach.

yeh im really noticing how dog eat dog north avalon is... if you arent aggressive enough to command the line up and get yourself onto a wave then you end up just going for a floating session.. (this happened to me on wednesday)

i have tried kiddies corner at palmy before and wasnt too bad its just such a long hike from where i am!
collaroy sounds like it could be promising. i have been heading to north av because of the people im surfing with, perhaps its time to embrace the solo surf and head to collaroy

i feel like im pretty cocky and stubborn when it comes to my surfing skills in that i think my skills are better than they are which is why i want to push for a smaller board. i feel like it could help my surfing going down in board size but does everyone go through a stage where they think they are progressing faster than they actually are... surfing can be such a tease

Collaroy is good when everywhere else is big - otherwise it'll be flat
When DY and elsewhere are maxing out, collaroy is the go-to spot.

Dropping to a smaller board almost never helps your surfing. If you can already do a manoeuvre - let's say a cutback, for example - a smaller board may help you do it quicker and more tightly. But a smaller board will never - never! - give you skills that you didn't already have.
