Any experience with these materials?

Postby STW » Tue Feb 03, 2015 12:57 am

Hi everyone, I'm looking at buying a mini mal but I still don't know anything about surfboard construction (trying my best to learn though) the website showing the board I am looking at says this:
"This surfboard is 100% hand made using top quality Australian materials: "SURFBLANK" foam, "FGI" resin. The deck is constructed with 6OZ+4OZ American "HEXCEL" fiberglass cloths and the bottom with 6OZ."
I have no idea if this is good or bad and have tried looking around the internet for answers but can't find any. It also says the board has g5 fins. Does anyone know if that's good? As I said before I'm still learning about board types, construction and fins so sorry if this is a stupid question. Thanks in advance for answering, and sorry I'm bombarding this forum with questions, I'm just keen to learn as much as I can.

Image This is the board, if anyone is curious.

You sure it comes equipped with FCS G-5 fins ? G5's are black. M5's are boned colored. And are you sure the board is 100% handed-made in Australia ? Constructed with Australian materials ( although it says American Hexcel ) but made where ?

I've seen these boards on trademe when my mate was looking for one and I advised him not to as I got the feeling they were a cheap pop-out.

Here are some answers for you, that board is indeed handmade ,in a pop out factory!
The blanks are made in Australia and shipped to where-ever and shaped there , the glass is American and maybe the boards are glassed in Australia or in where-ever. Quality a good guess?
shape and size wise probably OK for your level.
The Trademe site is a New Zealand type of Ebay, and both the Australian and new Zealand sites and probably American site are the selling ground for popouts which look romantically glossy and good but fail under usage.
Where are you based at the moment?
There could be some good advice available as to where and what to buy from a reputable dealer.

You're speaking to the trademe surfboard king here.. remember I brought and sold 11 boards in the last year

I'll happily give him some advice and what prices should buy what. I used to hawk through all the surfboard listings on trademe everyday and have found successful boards for 4 of my mates   :woot:
