About the maling of a surfboard

Postby Chillefyr » Sat Feb 02, 2013 10:14 pm

Hi guys.

First off, pardon the bad english, ist not my native language.

Now, Ive had some surf lessons, mostley SUP, and i really got to like it, hoping to get better, and start a new hobby for miself, i decided to build my own board. But... I know notning about shapes, length or the weight of the board. Im 14 yr's. 5'9 (175 cm) and weigh around 62 kg. Ive decided to build it in polystyrene, covered in clingfilm, and then fiberglass (the Polyester resins witch harden the fiberglass melts the polystyrene, so it has to be covered in something).

Here in Denmark we rarely have really big waves, i think the averagen would be something like 1 meter/3 feet, measured from the seasurface.

So im basically asking, what shape/size should my board be (i kinda want it semishort), and does my plan sound alright to you folks?

Kindly regards, Villum.

The English translation of what I was going for: I would suggest a longboard normally but since you are asking for a shortboard I would recommend a "fish" or an "egg". As for the size, since you are 5'9 I would say a 5'11 to 6'2 would be good for you. I do have to say that most of the time, the amount of volume of a board is a key thing to know. The more volume, the more water displacement, which means more buoyancy in smaller surf. I hope my danish isn't too rough, but I figured it would be easier in your native language

by the way, you can bypass the need for cling film if you use epoxy resin intead of polyesther.
