6'10 gun shape as step up board?

Postby davebod » Sun Jan 29, 2012 6:31 pm

I currently ride a 7'6 nsp looking to get something lighter and more maneuverable , it would prefer a 7'2 fun board but can't really find one for cheap . I found a 6'10 ricky carol gun for cheap and wanted to know if its appropriate i attached the link frm craigslist so u can c the board.
Any help would be really appreciated

No, a gun is in no way suitable as a board for a beginner or for a step-up board.
There's a whole lot more to boards than just their length. From the link, I can't tell what the dimensions are or an awful lot about the board, but a cheap gun would be a dreadful choice for a step-up board.
Wait until you can get that funboard, and then a 6'10 (or a little longer) would be about right.

Good advice for you there davebod. Just hang out and wait for the right board, otherwise you'll just be wasting your money and get frustrated in the surf.

Ok thanx for the advice guys! Ok so what's the deal with pop-out boards made in china they seem to cheaper (400 new) brands like challenger and surfboard Australia ( they r east coast companies) are they decent enough boards or should I splurge on a mctavish or kechele etc. I'm talking about decent pop outs that r not epoxy rather fiberglass and foam .
Thanx for ur help!

Where I live guys get beat up for riding pop outs

Personally I don't believe in the whole-stepping up to a short by inch by inch-thing. Why not just buy a short board and start practicing now. Sure, it will suck at first, but mix in your surf days with your funboard so you're still catching waves. In a few months you'll probably be at least popping up on the shorty, while if you went the "stepping up" route you wouldn't even start learning to ride a real shortboard until a few years from now.

i partially agree with you johnny, however i see it far too much when i am surfing that people have gone out and bought a board that is too far out of their range, and they spend the whole session not even being able to stand up. fair enough if you have two boards to mix it up, but to get the most out of shorty you want to be right out the back where there are nice big clean waves that only few people have the ability to get to. whats the point in getting a shorty and not being ale to stand up on it, keep falling off, finally standing up on a wave and then washing off the back because the conditions are unsuitable for the board. i would suggest getting a good quality minimal. i ride an 8ft bilbo torpedo with a tri fin FCS-MR TFX setup, and they have improved the board and my surfing no end. i can easily surf anything from half a foot to 8 foot no problems. and its great fun too. whilst everyone else is struggling on their little boards to pop-up im off and catching almost every wave that i set out to catch. that to me is much more fun. but obviously when the time is right i also want to progress to a much shorter board. 6ft venon retro fish or maybe a rusty mod fish.

i think if you are going to make a step up, then make it worth while, but don't try to get something out of your range other wise you wont enjoy it. thats just my point of view.
