Beginner Board

Postby superquin » Sun Dec 18, 2011 12:07 am

I know there are forums for this but i wanted to be specific. I am 15, 6ft,190, and pretty little surf experience. I just moved to galveston,tx and idk if you guys know but the surf here is pretty lame. I live .5 miles from the beach and i can't drive but only walk or bike and i was wondering if i could buy a short board? It would be great to have that instead of a fun board because of the distance and they have a ton of used ones here (was looking at this http://houston.craigslist.org/spo/2727568249.html ) I have a 500 limit and NEED A WETSUIT, so make it 400. Recommendations and advice please!!! Thanks guys and i am dedicated, will go as much as i can which will be pretty much whenever it is surf able!

With "very little surf experience" and the general lack of sizable surf in Galveston, I'll go out on a limb and predict that the more experienced folks around here will tell you "short board = bad idea". There are bicycle racks available that can handle longer boards (I carry a 9' board on my bike almost every day). If the cost of a buying a rack plus the board and wetsuit exceeds your budget, there are some plans out there for building a bike rack for very little money.

Get out the video "Step into Liquid" get some friends with a boat and get a big board and go Tanker surfing
I've taken up troll hunting just for fun, instead of a rifle I'll just use a pun! 冲浪爷爷

You need a longboard having a minimum length of 9 feet. It is this simple given the facts.

Surf report I looked at for Galveston said water temp currently 57 degrees....?

Hmmmmm...you may want to find a way to scrape together a bit of extra cash for a wetsuit. From Colorado or no, you're not going to be happy for long in water in the mid-50's without some kind of protection. Look for a used suit on Craigslist or the like, even a 3mm suit would greatly extend your time in the water, and the more time in the water the better.
