When Should I move from my lil foamie to the real thing?

Postby joeym4130 » Mon May 11, 2009 8:24 pm

Don't really have anyone else to ask so ...
Been surfing about 7 times now, Life changing I say.

I been renting a 8' foamie, I feel like I have progressed well. I can paddle onto practically any wave I want to make (they're small and seem easy to catch ;) ) and getting up isn't something I have to think about anymore. The last time I went I was struggling to turn that foam creature, but I was able to go backside by grabbing the rail and just digging my heels in. It felt so good. For some reason turning on my frontside was hard for me on that, but it happened once or twice. Most waves that day turned to mush fast.

So given my time on the foam, I was going to rent a 8' fiber ( I think thats what theyre constructed of @ the rental place).
Is this appropriate? I just didnt want to spend the afternoon being discouraged if I really wasn't ready yet.
Better yet, anything special I should be ready for? Besides guarding my face when i fall? :D

lol thanks, i guess thats all i needed.

You know, i go out to surf all by myself, I like it that way too, but then when I need to ask something like this thats when i need advice haha. I went once with a friend but for some reason I liked it way better sitting out there all day just not having to worry about 'hangin out' with anyone else when they wanna go sit on the beach or get drinks at a bar

i cant wait to get on a real board :D

drowningbitbybit has it right. Once you stood up on a foamie it was time to move on. When you try a glass board and you want to turn don't try as hard to turn as you did with foamie. The glass board as long as it is a decent board will turn so easy.

The funny thing is that the very fact you were asking the question means you knew the answer. You felt you were ready and really wanted to, you just wanted to know you were doing right.

Get a proper board - you're in for so much fun!!

Just remember that proper boards are made to turn, foamies aren't. If you try 'grabbing the rail and digging your heels in' on a decent board, you'll be in for a shock!!

joey,
many people the world over do not learn on foamie. They begin on a hard board. Let us know what you get for a new board. Don't be ashamed to buy used. I rarely buy new. Post a photo to show and tell.
