Im 71 and widowed.
I grew up surfing in Northern Califonie.
I haven't been on a board in 30 years.
I don't expect my old ridgeback to live through the winter and hope to travel...somewhere, next fall.
I'm to old and ugly to ever hope to have a woman under me ever again but I would like to feel the mother ocean under me one more time.
Face it, I have...my shredding days are over., but I still think I could paddle out on a longboard on the right day. My double overhead days are gone too, I reckon but any kind of break with thick rollers, good food and mellow folkies would make life worth living again.
I lost my wife 2 years ago and waiting to follow her is getting boring. I'll have a year of laziness to lose but a month to do it...it start.
I HATE resort life but I'm a bit beyond a tent trip.
I live on the gulf coast of Ms. (I tried for a few years but ya can't get past sucking for waves here)
I've dreamed of Indonesia, of course, forever. But 36hrs on a plane is a bit much. I worked with Continental Airlines...the thrill is gone
But...the more I've researched the closer to home I've gotten.
I would REALLY like to get a place in Portugal and travel/surf there and visit Europe but the rapist felon king running Newmerica is going to make all of Europe a dangerous place to visit. I hate Americans and I AM ONE... can't blame the est of the world for hating what we have become too!
That kinda leaves me with South of the equator for now.
What little research I've done on South America has me wondering about norther Peru and Brazil.
Warm water is the pull for me. I'm over wet suits. I grew up in 52°F water, nuf said bout dat.
I understand how beginning travelers enjoy 'camps' but I'd like to spend 3 or 4 weeks, at least, so I'd like to be mobile.
Any eyedeers?
(I'm not adverse to buying a board. I dont want to travel with my board. I worked baggage service... I've sent to many surfers home with a bag full of nighmares that were NOT reimbursed. Shopping sucks too. I paid a shop in Puerto Rico the last time I was there the board is still there.
LoL...funny now but it's why I'll never go back to that hideous little rock.)
Thx again for any feed back. I've got about 9 or 10 months to plan so anything will help.

A lot answer. to you after welcoming you:WELCOME CODGER!! I’m 76 been surfing since 1958 had deaths Vietnam draft possibility, had cancer, have diabetes, got a long list of negatives that I could use as reasons for non surfing.
So a blunt call go through your list again, discard it. NOW list all the reasons you want to surf again.
Choose an age and capability type surf craft, do what we did about Vietnam chuck the politics and that fear out the window, go surfing.
Soft boards, boogie boards surf mats, paipo the only thing stopping you is that list of limitations.

You want mother ocean under you……..get out there your wife would lcelebrate you having a full life after her !
You have nothing to lose except FUN you have 30 years to catch up.GOPHER IT

You have 9 months so I suggest you spend that time getting in reasonable surf shape. If you don't have the right fitness the beginning of your surf sessions will involve not catching waves because you are out of shape. I mean unless you enjoy trying to catch waves and failing. I understand the orange felon king is messing everything up. It's not hopeless but fairly dismal.. 71 is not too old. I hear if you surfed as a youth then it's just like riding a bike but I didn't start surfing until I was 18 and after quitting for 12 years it was like starting all over but fun for me. I can't tell you where to go but I live on Kauai and it's likely too expensive for you and the majority of breaks are beyond your abilities but warm waves is all there is here.
