Surfing Waves

Hello everyone!

I have been learning to surf for two years. I have a medical condition which causes my bones to break very easily so I have to be very careful in the sea. I am still at the white water stage although I can catch green waves on very little days. I am still very scared to paddle out but I'm working on it! So...my question is...

My partner and we are going to Australia for a month and we're going to a beach that has little waves a lot of the time, which is great! I have a catch surf 6 ft board foamie which is super fun but I also rode my partners firewire which is also great.

Can anyone recommend a board for surfing every day in little waves? I feel like my foamie I might grow out of quickly but maybe I shouldn't use the firewire as it's a proper board, if you see what I mean!

Any nice beginner/medium boards anyone can recommend?

Where are you going in Australia?

I obviously dont know anything about your condition but, without a doubt, hitting a hard board (or it hitting you) can be quite an impact. Much harder than a soft board (although they can pack a fair punch as well). So seems like you should stick to a softboard, at least at this stage when falling is pretty common.

If you are still in the white water then a 6ft catch surf isnt the best board at all, unless you are about 80lb and under 4 1/2ft tall. Grab a board that is 2-3 feet longer than your height. If you are still on white water and not paddling out the back, you will not outgrow this board for quite a while. And you can do plenty of things on a foam board even once you have developed your skills further.

As to which board - unfortunately Australia doesnt have the wavestorm for some reason, which would have been ideal (but if you can get one where you live and bring it with you - perfect).

There are plenty of other softboard options around, just make sure you get something with a stringer (hard wood down the centre), otherwise you are getting a big bodyboard that will flex and bend and wont be any good. All proper foam surfboards will have a stringer so they arent hard to find; its mostly a check to avoid buying a cheap board that will be a waste of money. You can look for them second hand, or perhaps rent if you are in the right place.There are quite a few good makes.

Otherwise, bring your current board along. As said its not the best - particularly for small waves - but its something.
