Hello everyone I'm a 44 y/o newbie. I have been living a life that is all work and sleep and for the past 8 years I have gained a lot of weight. I went from a fit 187 exercising every day to a very out of shape 240 pounds. I have wanted to surf for many many years. I purchased a beater board 9'10 it's wide and thick. Nose is like 18 inches. I have begun working out and will get down below 200. I live in SE Florida and hope to learn from more experienced long boarders on this forum

While surfing will help you get in shape the motivation to surf will help you to get in shape for surfing. Welcome to the forum. I went from a superfit 170 pounds to a semi fit 185 in college and then quit surfing and went to 220 and out of shape. I have managed to get down to 210 and fairly fit in my spare time and relearned to surf but not as well as I did prior. But I do light weights 2 times a week, Hike up and down a hill (500 feet elevation) 3 to 4 times a week, and stretches every day and surf 2 times a week for 30 minutes. I am 63 years old now so you should have an easier time.

Thank you. The idea of catching a wave one day has motivated me to get back in shape!

Welcome, V. One of the most inspiring sights on my beach is the occasional spherical surfer—man or woman—out there following his or her bliss. And usually better at it than I am. The more you think about the fun, the less you'll be thinking about "the workout," and the quicker you'll be getting back in shape. Whether you lose that weight fast or slow, don't quit having fun!

I started at 43 years old.....you're not too old! :).

For the weight loss, it will start and end with diet. Exercise is good for fitness, changing eating habits is the only way to lose and maintain a lower weight.

Yes I've gone back to my old meal plan which was very clean eating.

Clean is good.....whole foods, no fast foods, canned or bottled drinks. Try to avoid food products that come from cans or frozen....pay attention to total volume of foods consumed, cut carbs, cut fats, stop short of eating until you are full, no alcohol, no eating after 6 or 7pm.....these things will make a difference.

Thanks guys. I don't drink alchohol so that part is easy. Preparing all my meals etc is the time consuming part.
