I'll be the one you see yelling, "Sorry, sorry, oops, watch ou---, damn it sorry, oh please mother of god no . . ." just before falling into the whitewater. Out about two or three times a month now at Linda Mar, in Pacifica, CA, where, to be frank, the above is more or less the total anyone there knows of surfing etiquette anyway. Had a guy yell to me last time I was out to look behind me. I looked, said thanks, and started paddling. He said, "No! Don't go!"

I have much to learn. Don't hate me.

So you're the one every one is talking about at Linda Mar Beach? (just kidding) that is one of the funniest intros yet. Welcome to the forum

You're at the right beach. Linda Mar is great for learning. Was the guy telling you not to go because he was behind you and closer to the peak? What was the problem? Anyway, welcome to the board.

He gave you a "Heads Up !" and you still went ? Well, in time you'll learn or be runned over enough it'll beaten into you...literally.

Just as bad though is when the surfing in position says "NO !!" and you thought he said "GO !!"

In Japan, the word for Stop is "Ma-te" but the word for Stand up is "Ta-te", that gets mixed up a lot.

Ha, in cricket one of the first things you learn when you call for a run is to say 'yes' or 'no'; not 'go' and 'no'. Never thought it would be the same in surfing...usually if there is a drop in or a snaking etc someone either yells 'mine' or 'behind you' or just an incoherent wail (depending on how annoyed they are) and you then know to get out of the way

(For the people not from a British colony/the UK, just skip the cricket bit. It's complicated to explain)
