Hey everyone,

Just wanted to say hello to the forum and more importantly thanks - I've been a lurker here for weeks after first discovering the forum on a random Google search about surfing etiquette and since then have learned a lot simply by reading a lot of the threads in the surfing lessons section. I was going to create an account to ask for advice about buying a board (or more specifically, where to buy one) when I come back from a surf camp in the Canaries in a few weeks, but I didn't want to be one of those people who creates a thread on what board to buy, gets enthusiastic responses from the likes of Jaffa and waikikichan and then disappears, never to be seen again!

On a side note, have any of you ever surfed in Fuerteventura before? What did you think of it?

Hi Emerald. Welcome. The only advice I have about buying a new board is to buy the right size board for your ability and to buy something cheap. Get a board that you won't mind finding a ding on. I'm on a super tight budget so buying a new $450 longboard just isn't realistic for me. I picked up a foamie to learn on simply because it's affordable and it's a beater. I am lucky to live in California though because there are a ton of cheap boards for sale on Craigslist. If I had to do it all over again, then I'd probably have waited till a cheap longboard came along on Craigslist. I just didn't have the patience to wait. Anyway, I view surfing as a sport where, if you stick with it, you'll probably collect a lot of surfboards, junkers and gems. So, I think it's good to hold off on spending a lot of money on a board until you have a better idea of what kind of board you really like riding. Of course, none of that applies if money isn't a problem. Anyway, welcome to the forum. Happy surfing.

Hi Surf Patrol and Rinky Dink, thanks very much!

As regards which board, I'm going to ask my surf instructor at the end of my week in the Canaries to see what he says, I'll be looking advice more on where to buy, and which brands... but I'll come back to that when I've been told what I should be getting!
