First post. Found the site because everytime i searched about learning something new this site came up first. So far lots of good info.
Live in northeast Puerto Rico, originally from VA. Bodyboarding on and off for years. Im 38 now and my daughter 11 wanted to learn to surf so we did it together. Now im hooked, picked us up a 7'6 hybrid funboard made by a local shaper, and a 6'8 swallow tail. Both can be ridden by either of us.
I have lots of questions and im sure a search will provide the answers. So far the biggest waves on a surfboard is 6ft. Im surfing 3-4 days a week and my daughter 2-3. Look forward to reading more and thanks for having me.

Hey 300! I know how you feel, that's how I ended up here too, it's a case of all roads lead to Rome! :) welcome aboard. What does VA stand for?

Its worldwide so american acronyms might be lost without a tad more info! How do you find the 6'8? I'm looking at a 7'2 at the mo and it seems scary small after my 8'4!

Puerto Rico is a nice place. It looks quite similar to Kauai where I live (like Kauai 40 years ago). Probably has much better surf compared to VA. :) Welcome to the forum.

Way better surf than Virginia. Seasons winding down however so im planning a lot of small surf.
I started with 2 lessons on a 9' foamy, then two on an 8' foamy. I seemed to be pickin it up quickly and didnt want to keep throwing money on rentals. So i found both used. Long one 7'6x22x3 $180Felt like plenty of board for me. Then the 6'8 ( $130)was a challenge. Good deals i thought. For some reason my feet wanted to land together on the pop up. I think i was intimidated. Once i passed that hesitation it was off and running. I had 4 days in a row of a decent swell and was out 2-3 hours every morning. Just pushed right through it. Now working on shifting body wieght. I need to read more to make sure im progressing in a good fashion. Or post up a thread would help

Yeah I guess if you have a specific question ask it, ask in either the surfing lessons forum or the surf chat forum. Lot's of the problems people have starting off are similar, problems catching waves, problems pearling, problems popping up, problems keeping up with the wave, problems getting out through the surf etc. Be sure to include your weight and height and age and board size and wave size. Also try to describe exactly what your problem is.
