Surfing Waves

Hello guys, my name is André, I'm 19 and have 1.84 meters.
I'm a really rookie in this waves world, actually I've never surfed yet.
So, I'm here trying to learn something about the equipments that fit for me, if I should buy a board or rent one and if I should pay for surfing lessons or try to learn by myself.
Probably I'll come to my beach house at least twice a year, and used fiber board here costs about U$150.00 and to rent one and use the entire day I'll spent about U$60.00.
So, I'll be thankful if you guys could help me.

Mate I'm only learning too so I think the others might help you out better but if you like surfing as much as i do and it costs that much to rent i'd def say buy your own board! There's nothing like having your own to head out on

There is a lot of very good advice on these forums about how to choose the right board for you. Chances are someone has asked the same questions so go ahead and use the search button! It's your friend

I used this site soooo much (and still do) and nearly every topic is covered here. Is 1.84 metres about 6'4?? I'm a tall guy too at 6'3 and i'm learning all the basics on an 8'4 board. Let me tell you that your weight will make a difference too. The heavier you are the more flotation you need.

There is absolutely nothing like the amazing feeling of standing up on your board for the very first time!! You are gonna have a blast!

Yes, about 6'4, I used to play basketball so... hahaha.

I was adviced to start with long boards to learn all the basics like you but I feel I can do more.
I don't know, maybe I'm pretty wrong but I consider myself a good swimmer, with a good balance and agile. As I told you, I've played basketball for 5 years in a competition level so I'm a kind of an athlete hahaha .
About weight, I have 77 kilograms, that's something that makes me think about the right board too, in the tables I found on the internet, my weight is for some board and my height for another one.

Hahaha yes, I love Brazil but also wanna know other countries, like Ireland, maybe we'll surf together one day ! hahaha

I am trying to figure out what a fiber board is. Anyway there is more to surfing than fitness. I met a guy who was an Olympic skier and extremely fit and great sense of balance. He also was a decent swimmer and grew up swimming and sailing. He started with a longboard and told me he didn't think it would be so difficult. Learning to ski is easier. You have to learn how to read waves and where to positon yourself and the wave changes so you have to react to the changes. He worked hard at it for 2 weeks and could surf a wave to the shore but not much more. The shorter the board you get the longer it will take to learn how to stand and ride it but perhaps the more fun you will have once you get it down if you are the type to enjoy shortboards. A funbord might be another choice for you since that is in between a short and long board and it will be easier than the shortboard option.

With "fiber board" I was trying to say, with some google's translator help, a board that is made of foam(I think it's fibreglass sufboard, isn't it ? )

Well, as I told you, I consider myself a good swimmer and with good sense of balance but I've never surfed yet so I don't know if I have ease catching waves. The closer I got to surfing was using a stand up paddle twice, pretty easy to learn I think.

I'm almost deciding to pay for some surfing classes and, if I choose to buy a surfboard I'll tend to a funboard or to a pop-out surfboard, depends of my performance on the classes. But, I think the foam boards pretty ugly lol . A fibreglass surfboard is much more beautiful and cool, without saying that makes you much more cool carrying it on the beach than a huge foam board. So I don't wanna spent money with foam boards...

Any advices ?

Hey your welcome over here for a surf anytime! But you'll freeze to death if you don't get a thick wetsuit!

Alright so you stood on a paddle board, did you try and catch any waves on it?

Its a great idea to get lessons at the start, there's so many things you want to do naturally in surfing that your body is telling you to do that are just wrong and will hold you back. A good instructor will help you past these IF YOU LISTEN to him!!

Another good thing is they will give you a personal and expert opinion of the type of board you should look to buy. Again listen coz they know their stuff!

Don't worry you'll only probably use the foamies for the lessons, but having fun is the main thing! Those sweet looking boards will come in time but first you gotta learn. Takes ages though so no rush!!

Remember what it was like learning to ride a bike? Now imagine the road is moving around and up and down underneath you as you are trying to stay up! That's kinda what it'll feel like first time!

I love looking at the nice cool boards in surf shops so one day its gonna be awesome to own a sweet looking one!! I've just bought a secondhand board and find myself eyeing up surfboards on the internet when I should be doing something else!

Do Brazilian girls like surfers?

Stand Up Paddle is very easy on flat water but trying to catch waves on an SUP is a different story. When I first started to SUP I used to call it FDP, Fall Down Paddle when I tired to catch waves because that is what I did. Take some lessons and listen to the instructor and go from there is a great plan.

What do you guys means with "secondhand surfboard "?
Oh boy! I don't know how to answer that for you cause I'm not a surfer yet and I don't know any surfer hahaha. But Brazil is a very big country and people are really different from one region to another, they have other likes and traditions so I think in the coast do girls like surfers!

Yes, when I talked about buy a surfboard I was always thinking of a secondhand surfboard hahaha. A new surfboard is too expensive to a new vacation and holidays surfer.
Cause, in fact, my mother that lives in coast and I'm here just when I doesn't have classes.
