Hello everyone! Looks like I've found a good forum here from what I've seen. :)

The name's Dave, call me amblin, 26, from Wiltshire. My sister has gotten me into surfing this year after years of playing on hols with the bodyboard... I had a few lessons from her at Saunton and Bantham, decided I loved it, so splurged on an 8' Roger Cooper minimal. Seems a perfect beginners board, easy to catch waves (until I can't paddle any more!) on and nice and stable!

I've already scratched the roof of my car with roof straps, snapped a fin on the sandbar at Bantham, but the most important thing: I can't wait to get back in the water!

Humming and ahh'ing about going to Saunton again this weekend, but asides my sis don't have anyone else to go surf with. :(

Nice to meet you all, hopefully I won't get in your way too much whilst I figure this whole standing up thing out! :D

edit: yay! Saunton on Sunday! If you see a guy on a red striped board falling off a lot it's probably me!

New here

Postby Shanytc » Tue Jun 30, 2009 10:31 am

Hey all,
I'm shany, 26 from Israel.
I decided to join this forum so I could pick up the knowledge/skills needed to surf for fun.
I've been doing only skatebparding for about 1-2 years, but never surfed (I guess it was the lack of sea-love :D and ear probs)
but none the less, i wish to learn for fun and try it out.
The waves in Israel are relatively small, 40cm-1m so surfing isn't ideal, but at least it's something.

i'M 1.73cm in height, weigth around 83kg, which height does my surfboard needs to be to begin with?
any specific brands that you think will last more than the other, or any brand will do?
since it's summer, i don't need a wetsuit (i guess?) so no need to buy that gear yet.

Welcome. Once you try it you will probably be hooked. Looking for a first board I would recommend going bigger. You should probably look into a longboard of some sort 8 - 9 ft and the more volume the better (longer, thicker and wider) it will make it easier to catch waves as well as stand up on the board. Once you get comfortable with that you can downsize the board. But the biggest mistake people make is trying to learn to surf on to small of a board. Go to a local surf shop and let them know what you are looking for and they will be able to find you a used board. NSP and BIC make good beginner boards that are not that expensive. Good luck and let me know if you have anymore questions

Hey there, Tom here. I've been trolling around on the site for a bit now, so I figured I'd say hello and introduce myself. I'm a beginner, as I've only been surfing about a month now. I've been out only around once a week, but have made great strides so far. I ride one of the more massive longboards i've seen around (11'1"), and believe me i've needed it for the weak florida surf as of late. I look forward to learning more and getting better. Thanks to all who've helped me via info on this site...i only look completely slightly retarded out there thanks to the advice. Cheers!

Alright,
Just recently got back from Newquay, had an awesome time and a good few days surfing. Would like to get into the sport but unfortunately live in Lancashire which isn't the best location for it.

Cheers.

Postby Rudyland » Wed Jul 08, 2009 5:54 pm

Hello, I'm Rudy from Newport Beach, CA

I just started surfing last March and fell in love the moment I caught my first wave. I'm learning on a shortboard, which I know is not recommended, but I've got a few friends teaching/helping me and have most of the basics covered so far - paddling, sitting in the lineup, catching a wave, and standing, sort-of. Making the drop/popping up is what I struggle with the most. I'm trying to surf every day and can usually be found at the Santa Ana River Jetties or Uppers.

I'll be positing more questions in the Learn to Surf area of the forum. I hope to get some good advice that will help me improve!
