Surfing Waves

Hey everyone how are you all? Thanks anyone for taking time to read this post by the way! Im stuck in a dilema here and would welcome any advice, im a beginner and have been out about 12 or 13 times and I was about to buy a 7'2 NSP Funboard but was told by my friend not to buy one and to get a 6'10 longboard, im 5'10 and weigh just under 12 stone. I am standing up the odd time but not always. What do you guys and gals think i should do as i can get them for around the same price.

6ft 10 in not in any a longboard. Have you got the legth right as 6ft 10 is starting to get into shortboard territory. Also tells us abit more about your surfing, how far have you got in the 12-13 times you've been out.

I assume that was a typo? 7'10? 8'10? 9'10 longboard?
Longboards start at about 9', and would be consided a mini-mal below that.

At your height/weight/experience, the 7'2 might be a little short for you. I'd go with a 7'6 or a 7'9 mini-mal. Or a proper longboard.

The mini-mal is probably the easiest to cope with at first, and is a better board if you plan on eventually going short instead of long.

I am surfing on beaches still at the moment as im not ready to surf the big waves, I have been using a foam board and have been able to stand up, I know how to do the pop up its just getting out and more time in the water to get better. Is a funboard worth buying would you guys say? Its a 6'10 minimal that i have the chance to buy also. I have been out on a shortboard and managed to stand up for a few seconds once or twice on on around 2 foot waves.

Generally bigger is better for learning on bu tim guessing seeing as your up in scotland near thurso then you'll be getting plenty of surfing in. 6ft 10 is quite short for a minimal but you may get away with it if your surfing regulary enough. But as i say bigger is allways quicker initially.

Thanks for your help both, think im just going to get the funboard, thought i was better with a longer board as thats what everyone says. Aint getting much waves up here right now but its coming to the time of year that it will pick up. Thanks again lads.
