How important are brands?

So I've been looking at boards recently on eBay (and in local surf shops but can't remember any brands from them because I wasn't looking seriously then) and the amount of brands I've never heard of is unreal! I was expecting to see ripcul, billabong, quicksilver etc boards but instead I'm seeing things like Rooger Cooper, Spider, Haiwian Soul, Rocky Point and loads more!
Are these best avoided or are they all as good as each other?

as far as i know billabong / ripcurl etc dont actually make boards. i would avoid ebay for boards - go to your local surf shop.

yeah buy them localy. personally brands dont matter to me, as long as it isnt one of those cheapo ones from costco. however i do perfer custom boards, they usually feel better for me. go with what feels good for you.

Quick deffo do a few boards, so do rip, sure the others do to.
They are as far as i'm aware used for instore POP/POS so likely to be decent copies of a good pro board produced cheaply, again i could be wrong.
A couple of the naive students from the uni surf club picked the ex store promo boards for £100 at the end of last years summer sale, bargain if they could ride them. Nice looking boards tho.

Cool, thanks for the replies.
I've seen a couple of surfboards on eBay from the big brands so they must do them but I expect they're really pricey!

Use craigslist.org for local used boards...
...and stay off ebay!
