Hey Chris,
Welcome to the wonderful world of surfing!!
There has been a lot of debate on this forum about pop out boards (BICs etc) compared to 'real' surfboards. I have a 7'2" BIC and I like it very much. They're practicly indestructable, so good for when you're learning.
I dont get into the water as much as I would like so the board does for now while Im still learning a lot of people say that you will learn quicker with a decent custom board - I have no experience of this.
It depends on how often you plan to surf and whether you think you really stick with surfing! and your height/weight and fitness level. (ie if your short, super fit and plan on surfing every day you may get away with a shorter board.)
Personally I wouldnt bother buying a pop out/first board brand new....I picked mine up second hand rather cheaply (ebay). If you have the cash to buy a new board and really think you will stick with it....get a non pop out board otherwise checkout the free adds and second hand market on the internet and in your local area. I assume the prices for second hand boards go up in summer so you
may benefit in waiting a while
Check out a few different board shops and see what the general consensus is for where you will be surfing....the guys on here around your area will have more advice on what board is appropriate for your area too.
There is loads of info on this kinda stuff if you use the search function and go through the older posts (you wont have to go far). There is also info on the main site, like here....

Good Luck and let us know how you get on.
