Advise on first short board

Postby Johno » Wed Aug 01, 2007 10:44 am

Hi All been surfing for a year now and I am going to treat myself to a new board. I,ve got a Bic 7 9 at the mow can chatch waves pop up and balance no problems,

I was looking at the following boards from my local shop (west Coast Surf)

Circle 1 6' 8" epoxy fun board
dims 6 8 x 21 x 2 5/8
swallow tail

or

O shea 6 8 Tru-flex EPS epoxy or in poly???
dims 6 8 x 20 1/2 x 2 5/8

I am 6 f 12.5 stone do the above dims look ok and does any one know what the boards are like quality, ride tufness etc.

or would i be better looking for a custom??

Any advise / comments would be appreciated

You're looking at about the right dimensions for your size and experience. Difficult to say without pictures but a funboard will be an easier transition from a 7'9 than a shortboard, and will probably be more useful in the waves you'll be on.

The major advantage of poly over epoxy is that you can have the exact design that you want. If you're gonna go with an off-the-rack board, then I'd go with the epoxy myself (assuming you're talking about 'real' epoxy like a tufflite). *awaits rant about supporting your local shaper*

Talking to a shaper (if you're honest about your ability and what you surf etc) is hugely useful though.

The dimensions look about right but do you want a funboard or do you want a shortboard? And yes i think you should get a custom one made, but then again i am biased.

Just had a look at the board. That kind of shape looks fine. I personally wouldn't have described it as a fun board, but it seems all kinds of boards get called fun boards these days.

support your local shaper!! (haha, there you go) actually epoxy boards are winning me over. i heard tuflites arent that responsive compared to traditional boards, but maybe they have gotten better. thats something i would check out before i bought one.

I couldn't see a circle one 6'8'' at 19'' wide on west coast surf.

I'd have recomended th e 21'' wide ones anyways.

BTW not seen the O'Shea tru flex yet but got the rep coming in on Tues so he might have a few in his van for me to scope. If you can wait that long.
