Tunnel fins are fantastic if applied correctly, the Tunl isn't ideal, as it is square rather than round, this reduces a lot of the tunnel fin advantage, nevertheless the Tunl will produce a lot of lift.
If you want to give one a go best to try it on a board with flat tail rocker and lots of nose lift, the bigger the board the better
Better still get a Vort-X tunnel or make your own from plumbing pipe. . . . light years ahead, way less drag, better handling, smoother, more speed.

Are you talking about the turbo tunnl or the tunl fin that was developed by World Surfing Tecnologys a few yrs back?
There is often confusion beetween the two. I agree that it is good when applyed correctly.
If you have actually tryed the TUNL fin I would be curious to know where and when?
Would you mind voting on my poll? Im actually amazed someone out there may have seen and tryed it!! :D

Blade Hag I have been building and surfing tunnel finned boards and winged fin boards since Adam was a grommet, and without putting too fine a point on it I am the world's leading expert on the subject, we call ours the Vort-X tunnel fin
The optimum tunnel fin configuration is the half round tunnel, the square Tunl uses some of the same principles, is nowhere near as good, but still good.
As for the turbo tunnel, thumbs down it has some serious drawbacks.
happy to answer more questions if youy like
Cheers

Well there are lots of things I'm not (like world shortboard chimpaon for example), but the world's leading expert on tunnel fins isn't one of them.

A buddy of mine did this in the field of Astro physics. Find something that no one else in the world is studying (or even remotely interested in) and, boom, just like that you're the worlds leading expert!!
I want to be the worlds leading expert in something too, I'll choose belly button fluff!!
Good Idea

Can't resist - so, am I to presume you know Laird Hamilton very well then??? If you do, then my apologies .......
Not knocking the winged fin boards, BTW - just been testing such a product from the USA..........

Why would you presume that I know Laird personally?
We were building winged hydrofoil fins for surfboards before Laird was, however we have taken the 'hydrofoil' principle and applied it to standup boards using the tunnel fin, rather than for tow in boards.
Just so that you understand, hydrodynamic knowledge is not a social issue, it doesn't require that you know people

Actually it has taken 12 years of full time work to get us where we are now with tunnel fin surfboard development, and contrary to what you imply, many people are very interested in it.. . . . if you are not, then why are you posting on the subject ?

Only because I was lead to believe (and he basically claims on 'Biggest Wednesday') that he evolved the idea for the foil fin for big wave surf in an effort to keep at least some part of the board in contact with the water at high speed.
So someone, I guess, is telling porkies........
Anyway - not that it really matters to me, as I don't know either of you...........

That's interesting, I firmly believe that people can get on the same 'wavelength' and subconsciously share ideas without being directly aware of it, and that's why so many new ideas occur simultaneously all over the world. When we started out with all this foil stuff we were living on Great Barrier Island and didn't even have a telephone, certainly no surf magazines.
Laird is right of course, a horizontal surface gives up and down control just like the wing on a plane, so can be used to hold a board in as well as lift it up. It is fantastic what Laird has done, our contributions are a bit less flashy, perhaps more subtle, as they are for paddle in surfing which requires that the board is in contact with the water.

Yeah most new developments often pop up in a few places , independantly, at the same time.

If you believe this then how can you claim to be the worlds leading expert on the subject when by your own admission someone else in another part of the world may well be working on exactly the same thing who is on your wavelength, etc, etc, etc.
I'm not particulary doubting your knowledge in this very interesting of subjects just find your self professed world leadership in the subject ermmm shall we say, interesting for want of a better word...

Make that world's leading known expert then.
I suppose that it is possible that there is someone out there who has as much knowledge and experience with tunnel fins as we do, but we have been at it for a very long time and no one has surfaced yet !
If you would like to know anything about how they work then go ahead and ask.
