Hi All,

Am new to this as you can probs tell by the name! but was after some general advice.
i am a complete beginner but have hired before and had no probs popping up on a bic 8'4'' magnum but felt once i was up it felt a bit too big if that makes any sense?!
I have looked on the other forums and had talks with different shapers but my questions are-

1. i am looking to get my first board soon but am confused with size and type, i am currently looking at either a 8'' custom mini mal or a epoxy 7'6 sunride or maybe even a 7'6'' mal. but have been told that a 7'6'' epoxy will be too small for the north east uk waters i will surf although it will be able to hold my weight fine. so a mal is better, BUT! these are probably too fragile for a beginer like myself and probs too big for me if i want to progress! Also the word 'corky' was used when being described what a epoxy is like to surf but have had conflicting advice on this. :bang:

This is all confusing the crap out of me  and any help would be appreciated.
I am 28 yrs, 5'11, 13 1/2 stone and fit

Cheers

Fish

ps. any views on sunride epoxys would be cool to.

7'6 too short for North East UK?? no thats not right loads of people ride shortboards up in the north east. including me. perhaps a little short for a complete beginner. about epoxy boards, they feel different to fibreglass boards and its up to the surfer to decide which they prefer. they do tend to be a bit tougher than traditional boards.

Epoxy board are good in a way that they are very very tough and do not damage as easy. They float on the water a lot better and are suppose to be easy to to paddle/catch waves on - but I do not rate epoxy boards at all.
I think they are way too heavy and chunky to do anything on. If anything people say how rubbish the foam sponge boards are, and yes they are - but I think learning the basics (paddle, stand up and turn) are far easier on a softboard than a pop out epoxy. Also cheaper.
Then once you feel comfoutable id say get a custom fiberglass board to improve and start really surfing

Like Sdude said yuou can ride anything on the East Coast what tosh, East Coast waves easily rival waves in the SW.
I'm 5'11 and just under 13st and ride a 6'5'' or 6'6'' board mostly.

Just buy a second hand mal, i personally would never recomend a pop-out to any one as i think they are less bouyant than a similar sized PU board.

Owt about 7'6-8 ft will be fine for learning on.

are you talking about pop outs?

there is a diffrence between cheap pop outs / surftechs / and foam shapped boards but glassed using epoxy resin

my mctavish surftech is so much lighter than a tradional glassed board of the same shape + performs extreamly well

plus theres not much diffrenct than a tradional glassed board and one thats done using epoxy other than its slightly lighter and a bit stronger giveing the board less flex

sorry i meant epoxy board pop outs such as bics and nsps

A few of the new tuflites look pretty awsome. A guy in a shop showed me this al merrick one and it was so light. He said it was very difficult to ding it to.
