Surfing Waves

was surfing on a 7'10" egg shapped funboard, it was pretty thick board, sometimes I felt like the board was slow, and I the control wasn't good.

Recently I surfed on my friends 7'8" that instead of being the tradition egg shapped board, has more of a pulled in nose (a little bit more triangular) and has a squash tail. I did fell I had more control over the board and I was able to get more speed. This board had a weird width, 23" wide.

So, now I shopping for a new one, and I would like more control. I don't wanna jump to a shortboard yet. I am thinking of getting a 7'8" or a 7'6".

Would it help me with control and speed? Would a 7'6 fun be too small for me since I am 6'1 tall and weigth 175lbs?

Someone I know is selling this board below, looks like this shape could give me more control cause it's kind of hybrid. What do you think? It's a 7'6.

I suspect thet by nature a bigger board is faster, but if I can have more control and can ride the wave better and get more speed.

Have you thought about a Fish. Fast has the volume to float you and gives you more control. then the typical fun board.

I was thinking the fish is for more experienced surfers.

It is but is still not that difficult to surf if you get the right size. I would suggest you try out a couple different boards in the water. A lot of shops have boards that they will let you try out.

oh i answered you post in the other forum, but you added that bit here about a bigger board being faster, no a smaller board is faster but you have to work harder to get teh speed out of it. And i wouldnt recommend going from a minimal to a fish, a fish is a pretty specialised board not really a learners board.

I think Roy might disagree with a smaller board being faster......I think I do as well. I think they might feel faster (greater change in acceleration/decelleration) but I think they are slower.

You may be right there but turning a longer board takes more.

roy disagrees with everything, thats why he gets so much abuse on pretty much every forum he posts on

Have you thought about a Fat Boy Flyer, it would be a more natural progression down in size.

Totally agree, I made that mistake and ended up having to buy another board a short time later.
