What Gloves???

Postby pault » Mon Nov 06, 2006 1:22 pm

Okay I've done the whole search thing and not really found an answer.

I was wondering what gloves you wonderful folks recommend?

Webbed fingers?

Mitts?

Normal gloves?

I've only been going properly for about a month and a half now, and paddling for the bigger (4-5ft) waves is still pretty exhausting, can the gloves help?

Not sure if i'm being too clear, but really appreciate your help :D

Probably dont help all that much if your paddling technique is rubbish :?
And they'll make it harder to grip onto the board etc when you inevitably paddle out and get caught inside.

Supposedly keep your hands warmer than normal gloves, but again, makes it difficult to grab board when things go pear-shaped. Some people think they make popping up difficult too.

Yup, probably the way to go. Get 3mm (or more) ones - the 2mm ones are too thin and get really stretchy (and hence full of water) very quickly.

Nope, surfing in gloves is even more tiring, and webbed gloves will just make your arms ache more.

I have tried the web golves out andfind it shortens my sessions. It takes a lot more out of you to paddel. Grip was never an issue while using them.

No, webbed gloves are out there!

Billabong & Tiki (amongst others.) make them. They only seem to come in 2mm though.

I've got a pair but to be honest, I'm not convinced with them yet. I swear I paddle just as hard without them!

Thanks S Boy and Drowningbitbybit :D

My technique isn't too bad  , its just that I injured myself playing footie a year back so I had a year of boozing and messing around with little exercise, so my staminas worst for wear.

I've been running about 3 miles in 18mins i'm pretty chuffed about, and doing press ups and all that malarky, I even bought Fit to surf which has been a great help.

So it looks like some normal gloves will do, but i might get some mitts just to do stamina training on the board if its staying flat for a bit.

When I say I get exhausted it is usually after an hour of constantly trying to catch waves.

Webbed gloves are lame pieces of filth - a waste of money. If they are so great; then why don't any of the pros use them?

They have been around for a long time...only because people who don't think they can paddle well - or want an easy out - buy them. Work on your technique and you will be better with out them.
