Driving with Wrap Rack question

Hey,

I bought a set of Wrap Racks from Salty Dog Surf shop in Daytona a couple weeks ago, before buying my board. I just drove down from Jacksonville (where I live and work during the week) down to Daytona (where my family is) this weekend and all down I-95 I heard this wooshing sound from my racks and kept glancing at the upper part of my Nissan's window to see if my board was still there. Having only driven twice with a surfboard, does anyone if such howling wind type sounds are commonplace?

Yeah, my removable racks make a buzzing sound when I go fast...Im pretty sure its pretty common

i just did 2000 miles across france and back with a soft rack and no buzzing. The buzzing is the strap buzzing against you roof, and will damage your cars paintwork. Its easy to solve tho- put a twist in the strap between the board and car, and put some padding in between the strap and roof where they meet like this-


i used some dusters folded up, cost me £1 for 5 of them in tesco, much cheaper than getting your car paint touched up and no buzzing.

Thanks GowerCharger. Since I got my board, I'll be taking it on my regular commutes on weekends, so this issue is something I want resolved.

Yeah - the buzzing sound is just like when you blow on a piece of (lawn) grass stretched between your fingers - it vibrates and 'buzzes'. Twisting it or putting some cushioning around the exposed stretched pieces will get rid of the noise because it won't vibrate properly to make the buzz..

what is the max speen you can drive with one of thoes racks and a longboard?

Ive done over 90 with my 6'10 on the top without any problems (on a private test track obviously)

Get some of the covers you get to rest your neck on your seatbelt and put them round the straps its stops the buzzing.
