I wouldn't buy softboard if I were you.

Why?

You will grow out of it very quickly and then you won't be able to resell it as quickly and easily as pop-up boards.

If you are thinking of learning to surf and afraid that the board might hurt you when it hit in accidents, then by all means rent a softboards and give surfing a try. But if you're thinking of continuing to surf after couple of tries, you better off buying second hand pop-up boards. It's a lot more durable and you can still resell it quicker than softboards

Does it being a softboard affect performance?
Im just looking for something REALLY cheap.
Can you suggest a site which sells pop up boards?
What if I bought it really big? Would it mess me up? Im like 5'4 and I weigh 116 pounds.

Softboard could be as good as pop-up board performance wise. But it's a lot less durable and it's non repairable when it's heavily damaged unlike pop-ups, which is repairable.

The bigger the surfboard the more forgiving it is for learning. The only thing is, bigger surfboard means it's heavier so it might not be easy to carry if you have to walk far to the beach.

You should be fine with 7'4 minimal to start with.

There are a lot of pop-up boards in the market but the most common brands are Bic and NSP (depends where you are, each continent has their local pop-up brands). Also, most surf shops has their own brand too, such as Ron Jon or even smaller surf shops.

Keep looking at this and other forums in their classifieds section, check eBay as well as going to local surf shops. If you look around widely enough you will find a cheap 2nd hand board that's in reasonable shape.

How fast do surfboards "damage"? Cuz I could always just buy a new 1.

Depends what you do with it really.

If you drop it from 10th floor or run it over with your truck it'll take seconds from a brand spanking new board to an absolute rubbish.

There really is no acurate time measure of how long it will take to damage your board. It depends entirely to the circumstances and anything can happen with your board while in the water, read this thread.
But in general epoxy boards are a lot more duarble than soft or fibreglass boards.

well my friend rented a 6'4" liquid shredder today and was really impressed with it, personally i have a 7'6" bz softboard and i hav no complaints but borneng is rite u do grow out of them fast.
