Surfing Waves

I am thinking of buying my first surf board but don't know what would be best for me. I am an amateur surfer...can do the basics after a few lessons. Have always hired boards, think they have always been longboards (probably a Pop-Out?!!) Was looking online and it said that short boards are most popular but is that best for a first board? I need some recomendations please!!

Uhhhh yeah, not wise to go from a foamie to a shortboard. Not only are you dealing with the diverse size change, but you are also dealing with the diverse material change. Foam to fiberglass.

DON NOT GET A SHORTBOARD!! i am like you, had a few surf lessons and hired boards. i went and brought a shortboard and it is so hard and so different. i am now going back to the surf shop to exchange it, they sed i would be fine on it even though they knew my surfing history...so be careful who you talk to! i am now going to get an nsp, really be careful bout what you buy, a shortboard is a real big change from the boards we have learnt on!

Very wise words there Naomi .

Get a skateboard, lossen your trucks.... then you will have a taste of what it's like wobbling on a shortboard.

Some can surf them, some are very athletic. I went from longboard to shortboard in 3 weeks. But I prefer hybrids.

Learning on a shortboard is alot harder but its also alot more satisfying, you just have to stick with it and DONT give up
i learned on a an extremly crappy, small, thin 11 year old board, it was really hard at the beginning but now i have so much fun just enjoying the speed you get with a shortboard, and the variety of tricks and manouvers.
Overall if your not a quitter and dedicated to learning how to surf, go with a shortboard, much more satisfying when you get there.
